Meet the Team - Ali Smith
This week we introduce team member Ali Smith as we continue our build up to Interski 2019 Pamporovo. Ali was part of the team that went to Ushuaia for Interski 2015 and this time is one of our delivery team tasked with sharing what IASI and Irish Snowsports is all about through our on-snow workshops. Ali is part of the IASI education team and regularly delivers IASI courses both in the UK and in the mountains of Europe. When he is not delivering IASI courses he is delivering performance courses and lessons through his business Ski Definition. Ali has shared some of his thoughts about this great sport so read on..
Learn it - tell us about when you learnt to ski?
I had my first ever ski trip, with the school in, Bulgaria 1987. I was hooked from the first day, the speed, the freedom, the mountains, it was simply perfection to me. Skiing gave the adrenaline rush I’d never experienced before! Simply loved it!
Love it - what is it you love about skiing/teaching?
Teaching skiing is all about the pleasure our students gain, from the simple ideas and experiments we place within our lessons. Giving them the knowledge and skills to explore the whole mountains for themselves. Then listening to their stories, as they talk about the adventure they can now have. Skiing provides so many amazing and wonderful emotions, that our language simply can’t place into words.
Live it - where are you based and what has skiing given to you?
Summer in the UK, winters now, Austria, Spain, Italy, Norway - The Mountains!
Share an Interski moment - past/build up/expectation
Flying the flag high & proud for the Irish Interski Team, on the opening run at Interski Argentina 2015 and leading the team top to bottom for the first ever full team run at an Interski for the Irish Team!!
What's your craziest moment on skis?
In Australia, Perisher ski resort. Drop off a 45 foot cliff, land in deep powder, snap 1 ski, but ski off, unharmed.
Thanks to Jason Clarke Photography for the photo.
