This week we introduce team member Phil Brown as we continue our build up to Interski 2019 Pamporovo. Phil's background is in ski racing and he has developed a great business, Impulse Racing, and BISS Racing, that is centred around schools. This will be Phil's first appearance at an Interski Congress but he has plenty of experience of attending major international ski racing events and a wealth of knowledge from the industry. It is fantastic to have Phil as a member of the alpine demo team.
Learn it - tell us about when you learnt to ski?
I was lucky to go away with the school at 12 (many years ago) and unlucky to hurt my ankle through ill fitting boots after 2 days! Applying for a job as a trainee instructor at my local dry slope at 17 got me the role even though my skiing was awful but the boys in the local race club invited me along and, with skiing pretty much every day for nearly 2 years before I touched snow, I fell in love with the sport and that’s stayed with me for over 30 years.
Love it - what is it you love about skiing/teaching?
I’ve been fortunate over the years to work with some great athletes from grass roots to international racers and the enjoyment of their first podium, their first win, or even the first race for these kids that is great to see and keeps me in the sport, along with helping to tutor and mentor to bring new coaches as some of these guys finish racing but want to stay involved in the sport.
Live it - where are you based and what has skiing given to you?
My wife who used to race, my young son and I now live in Aosta and have run training in Pila for over 7 seasons. Working with schools in the main and building schools ski teams, running events in the UK with up to 450 kids racing in a day and supporting alpine races. We also have some weeks where we have a break from the kids and work with adults who would like to try racing as a means to improve their general skiing. In general though, with the schools, we have a year round business in the sport which keeps us busy.
Share an Interski moment - past/build up/expectation
The demo team trials in January were a special moment for me. Having had a big accident 13 months previously which took me out of the sport for 9 months, I was working hard on rehab with a goal of getting back to my skiing best for the Irish Interski Demo Team trials, so to make it back to the level to get onto the team with some great skiers was really special.
What's your craziest moment on skis?
Over 30+ years, there’s a few! Probably attending the 2016 Youth Olympics working with a Team GB ski cross athlete. Crazy because it was such a busy time. My son was born (nearly two weeks overdue!) just 16 days before I travelled and, at the same time I travelled to Lillehammer, my wife was heading to Aosta for the remainder of the season. I was only there for 6 days but it was great to be part of the whole event.
